Reflections on Launch Day

I want to thank you all for making the launch of Mercenary Marketplace Volume 1 a huge success. I received so many wonderful comments and congratulations from everyone.

In the first 24 hours I sold over 100 copies of Volume 1, which is roughly what I expected to sell over the entire lifetime of the project. So you blew away my expectations, and then some. Which is so humbling.

Some other highlights from launch day: We had several people generously pay to add free community copies to the pool for folks who can’t afford a copy, which is amazing. And I got my first supporter on Patreon who’s helping fund ongoing development for Volume 2.

My favourite part of the whole day yesterday was getting to hear everyone's reactions to all my hard work after months of silent fretting. A huge thank you to everyone who sent me messages and comments you absolutely made my day.

For other creators who are potentially interested in trying to launch you own modules I’ve got some additional numbers I can share. Approximately 25% of the visitors to my Itch.io page came from Steve (Recall Knowledge) ‘s YouTube video, with a further 25% coming from my launch day posts on the PF2e and Foundry sub-reddits. Another 6% of visitors came from the Forge, and a measly 0.5% of visitors came from my Twitter posts (evidently my tweet game is not strong). With the remaining 42% of visitor’s finding the page either directly through itch, through the link on the FoundryVTT project page, or through the announcement posts on discord, with the official FoundryVTT discord announcement bringing in a significant boost in traffic.

Overall the project page got ~1700 views over the course of the first day, which is I hope a good number, but should at least give other creators a rough idea of the relative success of my advertising efforts.

Obviously the whole post-launch period is an entirely different kettle of fish, but I'll try pass on any useful information I learn for other prospective creators. And if anyone is looking to create their own premium content module and has any questions I'd be delighted to share what I've learned along the way.

The biggest hiccups I encountered on launch day were not realizing I needed to manually distribute external keys for the Free Community Copies, and not realizing that DTRPG was going to take several days to allow my project to go public, meaning that I ended up launching only on Itch.io instead on simultaneously on Itch.io and DTRPG.
